All About Dolomite Countertops

When it comes to choosing a kitchen countertop material, big names like marble and granite tend to dominate all discussion, but you might be pleasantly surprised to learn about a few lesser-known materials such as dolomite which have been around for just as long as marble and granite but don’t share the same reputation.

In dolomite’s case, this lack of awareness is largely due to the fact that this material is not particularly different from marble and is also not particularly widespread in availability which has led to it being a very niche option. By no means does that make it a bad option for your countertop though, dolomite has plenty of great natural advantages including its spectacular visuals and great practical durability.

If you’re wondering whether or not you might want to opt for dolomite, our definitive guide will help you figure out if it’s the right option for you.

The Relative Popularity of Dolomite Countertops

Dolomite is one of the least known countertop materials, due to its aforementioned familiarity with marble and also relative lack of availability. Due to this, dolomite tends to be only moderately popular at best in most times, although it has seen a recent surge in popularity due to the fact that dolomite has some very great practical advantages that place it ahead of marble in some durability categories.

Don’t be too distraught by the seeming lack of popularity that dolomite suffers from at this moment, it is expected that dolomite will experience an improved public reputation as more and more people are shying away from marble and granite due to a number of reasons that will be made clear soon.

Dolomite, therefore, may not be the most popular material at this moment but that is very likely to change in the near future, so don’t completely count out dolomite as an option just because it isn’t a popular option at the moment, that will probably change soon.

Kitchen Remodel Trends The Different Varieties of Dolomite

Dolomite is a naturally occurring sedimentary rock that is composed of limestone and mudstone mixing over long periods of time. It can, therefore, be found in a wide diversity of various natural colors and patterns although most dolomite varieties used for kitchen countertop purposes will be white or gray. Some more rare varieties can even be found in a tan color with sleek veins of pink or blue.

Generally speaking, though, white and gray dolomite tend to be the most common, and popularly used for kitchen countertop use. This is because white is naturally the most abundant color that dolomite is found in. Often, dolomite is mistaken for marble because the two stones share a very strong appearance due to being formed by similar geological processes.

Overall, dolomite is a very beautiful looking stone that is often considered to be on par with marble by some, although dolomite has the great advantage of not being nearly as vulnerable to heat or scratches are marble is.

Kitchen Remodel Trends The Cost of Dolomite

Cost is one of the big advantages of dolomite as it is known for providing an appearance that is extremely similar to marble for a much lower cost. In the U.S state of Florida, you can get a dolomite kitchen countertop for an average of $50 to $75 which makes it much more affordable than most other natural minerals, especially marble.

If you’re someone who’s adamant about having a natural mineral kitchen countertop, and you prefer the look of marble but don’t quite agree with the current market rate for marble, you may find dolomite to be a great option for you since it looks just like marble but has a far lower cost.

Cost is one of the biggest advantages of opting for dolomite, it is not the only advantage though as the physical durability of dolomite is very well-reputed.

Kitchen Remodel Trends The Relative Hardness of Dolomite

Hardness is one of the principal concerns of kitchen countertop materials since having a countertop made of a material that cannot handle common household kitchen items placed upon it will not be very practical for use long term.

Dolomite performs relatively well in this category, with a Moh scale ranking of 4 (a ranking of 1 means that material is extremely soft while that of 10 means a material is extremely hard). While dolomite might be slightly less hard than marble, it is still a very durable and suitable material for constructing a kitchen countertop.

Dolomite is much harder than many other common materials such as limestone, so it can withstand force to an extent that makes it practically suitable for use in a kitchen. Although, it must be admitted that dolomite is much softer than granite, so it is on the lower side of the spectrum when it comes to kitchen countertop hardness rankings.

Kitchen Remodel Trends How Easily is Dolomite Damaged?

Dolomite is a relatively soft material, relatively speaking, so it is possible to damage a dolomite countertop surface if you are reckless with it. It is important to not expose your dolomite countertop to excessive force since it can crack or potentially break, as any material can if exposed to excess stress.

Dolomite is also very susceptible to being scratched, so it is not possible to cut any food items on your dolomite countertop without using a cutting board in between.

Additionally, as natural mineral dolomite is a porous material. This means that dolomite is very susceptible to being damaged from spills and being stained as well. Dolomite can also be damaged by etching if acidic chemicals such as lemon juice are spilled on it.

Overall, though, dolomite is not as easily damaged as marble since it is far less porous than marble, but it is also not nearly as durable as granite or quartz. If durability is a very strong concern for you, you might not find dolomite to be the most suitable material for you although you can be certain that if it is taken care of properly, dolomite can be a very long-lasting material that may be worth the initial investment.

Temperature Resistance of Dolomite

Being able to withstand high temperatures is one of the most important qualities for any material that’s being used for manufacturing a kitchen countertop since virtually all cooking methods involve the use of high temperatures.

Dolomite is a sedimentary rock, so it will survive being exposed to high temperatures, but do be warned that it is possible that the sealant you’ve used might experience damage from exposure to high temperatures depending on the kind that you’re using.

Also, it is relatively safe to place a hot pot or pan over a dolomite kitchen countertop as long as you are sure that your sealant is heat resistant. If it is not, it would be much better to use a metal rivet as an intermediary between a hot pot or pan and your countertop.

Overall, dolomite performs decently well in the temperature resistance category, performing much better than the marble but being far less heat resistant than some engineered materials. So, depending on how important heat resistance is for you, dolomite may or may not be a desirable material for you.

Weakness of Material

Dolomite is a relatively soft stone, so it can be badly damaged if exposed to excessive force. It can also be scratched and stained quite easily. Dolomite is also very susceptible to etching if exposed to acidic chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

Overall, dolomite shares many of the same weaknesses as marble although in comparison it is far less physically durable but much more heat resistant and much less porous.

It is, therefore, not very difficult to damage a dolomite countertop especially if you do not immediately clean up any spills made on its surface. Since it is a porous material, once a spill Is made it is very difficult to remove it from the surface of the dolomite. The liquid can cause a lot of damage once it has penetrated the surface of the dolomite.

Maintenance

Dolomite requires a relatively moderate level of maintenance, very similar to marble in fact.

As a porous material, dolomite needs to be re-sealed annually as does marble. If any liquids, especially those that have either a very high or very low ph level are spilled on them, they need to be cleaned up immediately or else the stone will become damaged.

Dolomite also must be cleaned using warm water and dish soap, and if exposed to abrasive cleaners such as Windex, vinegar, ammonia, or bleach it will become damaged.

If properly maintained, dolomite can experience a good degree of longevity not unlike other natural materials such as marble and granite.

Overall, dolomite has a moderate to high demand for maintenance that is extremely similar to other natural materials, especially marble.

Kitchen Remodel Trends Pros and Cons

Pros

Comparatively Inexpensive

Dolomite is much less expensive than marble and granite, so if you don’t want to have to spend too much to acquire a kitchen countertop made of a material, dolomite might be the right option for you.

Longevity

If it’s properly maintained, dolomite can last for a very long period of time similar to marble and granite, so investing in dolomite is relatively safe if you are sure that you can fully maintain your countertop.

Less Porous

Dolomite is a porous material, however, it is much less porous than many other common stones such as marble, so it will not suffer from damage due to stains to the exact same extent that marble does.

Beautiful Looking

Dolomite is a very beautiful-looking material that bears a very strong resemblance to marble, and it is often mistaken for marble as well, so it can be a good option for you if want the look of marble.

More Temperature Resistant

Dolomite is not as easily damaged by high temperatures as marble is, albeit not by a very great extent.

Kitchen Remodel Trends Pros and Cons

Cons

Lack of Popularity

Dolomite may be gaining in popularity these days, but it is still one of the least known kitchen countertop materials out there.

Comparatively Softer

Dolomite has a lower moh scale ranking so it is much more susceptible to being scratched or damaged than marble. While the difference is not huge, if you are someone who is very concerned with durability dolomite might not be a good option for you.

Limited Colours

Dolomite, as a natural product, is available in a very limited range of colors.

Prone to scratching and staining

Dolomite can be scratched and stained very easily, so if you intend to use your kitchen countertop very actively, dolomite might not be a practical choice of material for you.

Requires Maintenance

Much like marble, dolomite requires a good degree of investment in terms of both money and effort if you want to maintain its appearance. While its initial costs might be low, you find that the long-term costs of maintenance are too high to be appropriate for you.

Conclusion

If you’re interested in a material that looks just like marble but does not cost as much, dolomite could potentially be a great catch for you because of its price advantage over marble.

In almost all aspects dolomite performs on the same level as marble with near-identical levels of durability. Where dolomite does differ from marble it is with respect to its far lower degree of porousness which is an advantage, albeit it is also slightly softer than marble. Dolomite also looks extremely similar to marble and is often mistaken for it as well.

Overall, dolomite is perhaps best for those individuals who just want a marble-looking material without the same cost as marble. In that regard, dolomite might be the best material for you, and it is currently growing in popularity so you might just find it to have been a worthwhile investment. However, if finding a marble lookalike that’s cheaper is not one of your primary goals, you find that dolomite has few to no real unique advantages that would make you get drawn towards it.
